Here are some websites we find interesting...
"The purpose of this web site is to educate people about sea-beans... their identification, their source, their travels, their variety, their beauty, and the plants that they produce. This web site contains images and information about sea-beans (drift seeds) commonly found on the beaches of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. The primary source for these sea-beans is the Atlantic side of South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. This site contains images and information to help people identify sea-beans from any locality in the world, but the expertise available and typical visitor to this site is for help with tropical Western Atlantic and Caribbean species."
"In the spirit of sharing information on the fabulous Internet Superhighway and the quest for knowledge, Wayne’s Word features quarterly and monthly articles about little-known and unusual plants of the world. These are mostly plants brought to Professor Wayne Armstrong by curious students who wanted to know more about them, or perhaps wanted to get a better grade in biology. Monthly articles will appear from time to time and are listed by the month that they first appear in reverse chronological order. Longer articles about various botanical subjects will be published on a nonregular, quarterly basis." The link above is for one of those such articles: Botanical Jewelry Necklaces & Bracelets Made From Plants.
Paul Marek of Vienna has a great site with heaps of information on mangroves around the world. You can purchase many varities here.
"There are about 70 different types of mangroves world-wide. Mangroves are described as plants that grow and thrive in salty water. Thus we have mangrove-ferns, palm trees, lilies, hibiscus, and many more.
"I along with many other people, only define plants as mangrove that grow like a tree or a bush and have viviparous seeds. Seeds that are already germinated on the tree so that once they are discarded they can take root and grow fairly easily, on the other hand they can swim in the ocean for quite some time until they have managed to take root successfully, which is how come mangroves have managed to spread themselves out all over the world."
"This on-line book by Ruth Smith is an attempt to record information about jewelry made from botanical substances. Ruth had to rely on the help of botanists in many parts of the world, an inquiry that made her realize how difficult it is to identify seeds out of context. The book features the necklaces and objects in her collection."
"Seeds of extraordinary beauty are produced by a variety of plants growing in the Amazonian rainforest, across the Andean uplands, and along the lush Pacific coasts of Colombia and Ecuador.
"This website celebrates these seeds and their use in necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and belts. These accessories are worn by celebrities like Shakira to women living in remote rural areas where the seeds are gathered by hand. On this website you will find pictures of some of these seeds and the jewelry they inspire."
"Making and wearing seed jewelery is an ancient tradition shared by many cultures across the globe, one still carried on to this day. Seeds have been worn both in ceremony and in daily life, for fortune and for beauty. Each piece that Abby Rose creates is one of a kind, she collects the seeds throughout tropical Australia and weaves them into beautiful organic adornments.
Discover and experience Rainforest Seed, Sea-Bean and Silver Jewelery from Tropical North Queensland at this site. Abby Rose is located in the Kuranda Rainforest Market, about 30 minutes north of Cairns in Far Northern Queensland."
What goes with collecting sea-beans better than tiki collecting?
In 2002, my friend Thom got a hold of some paint. If it didn't move or run, he tried to paint it – or at least put it on paper. Now he creates woodcarvings of all sorts, colored pencil sketches, watercolors, acrylic paintings and murals – not to mention, everybody’s favorite – tikis. He loves the tropical and aquatic theme, having produced over 300 paintings, drawings and wood carvings. All his work is original. If you have an idea in mind that he can help you with, e-mail him through his website or call him at 321-507-8935.
